Pavel Durov Arrested, the head of Telegram, was taken into custody by French authorities when his private plane landed near Paris. He is being held for alleged involvement in illegal activities related to his messaging app, Telegram.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov ARRESTED at French Airport
According to BBC Officials claim that Durov didn’t do enough to stop illegal activities on the app, like drug trafficking, child exploitation, and fraud. Even though Telegram previously said it had good controls, it is now being looked into for its role in helping criminal behavior.
Durov, who is Russian but also has citizenship in the United Arab Emirates and France, has been living in Dubai since leaving Russia in 2014. This move came after he refused to shut down opposition groups on his social media site, VKontakte when the Russian government asked. Despite being banned in Russia in 2018, the ban was lifted in 2021 after Durov refused to share user data.

The Russian Embassy in France is asking for more information from French authorities and permission to see Durov. Russian officials and Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova have criticized the arrest, accusing the West of having double standards on free speech and democracy. Elon Musk also showed support for Durov on social media, using the hashtag #freepavel.
Telegram, which allows groups of up to 200,000 members, has been criticized for its loose controls, which has led to the spread of false information, extremist content, and illegal activities. The app has recently faced scrutiny in the UK for hosting far-right channels involved in planning violent unrest. Even though some groups were taken down, cybersecurity experts say Telegram’s controls are much weaker compared to other social media platforms.
